Wenner-Gren Center
Wenner-Gren Center is one of Stockholm’s most famous landmarks. It’s a high-rise building standing 74 meters tall with 25 floors, where the spectacular event space WGC 24, featuring a delightful 1960s style, is located at the top of the building!
Wenner-Gren Center was built between 1959 and 1961. At the time, it was Sweden’s first high-rise building with a steel structure and, for a period, the tallest building in Europe with a steel frame. The building stands 74 meters tall and has 25 floors. The architects were Sune Lindström and Alf Bydén. In addition to the high-rise, there is also a lower, semicircular building that houses guest researcher accommodations, in line with Wenner-Gren’s wishes.
The building is named after Axel Wenner-Gren, who was the CEO of Electrolux and became wealthy in the 1920s through the sale of vacuum cleaners and refrigerators, particularly in the USA. In 1955, Axel donated 8 million kronor to create an international center for visiting scientists in Stockholm. The building’s location was carefully chosen on the way to Arlanda Airport, symbolizing a gateway to the world. The government provided a free plot near Sveaplan for the project. Today, the facility is a listed building and is owned by Fabege.
