‘The White City’ – a functionalist dream in Bromma from the 1930s

Södra Ängby in Bromma, with its 500 houses, is the largest area of single-family homes in Europe built in the functionalist style. Join us on a journey back to a time when Sweden was considered the most modern country in the world.

Södra Ängby is beautifully situated along the shores of Lake Mälaren, about 8 km west of Stockholm. When it was built in the late 1930s, it was referred to by the then city planning director as “the last garden city.” The area showcases the qualities of the functionalist movement and gained international fame. Films were shot here, and for a time, the area earned the nickname “Stockholm’s Hollywood.” The functionalist style had made a significant impact during the famous Stockholm Exhibition held at Djurgårdsbrunnsviken in 1930. Södra Ängby became one of the most prominent examples of a district designed according to the functionalist principles of sun, light, and air.

The area is well-preserved, and the houses have been carefully maintained by their owners over nearly 90 years. Most of the houses, designed by architect Edvin Engqvist, are neatly arranged like 500 sugar cubes on two forested hills.

The tour will be a city walk, starting at Ängbyplan Metro Station at street level. The tour lasts about 1 hour and takes place on Sunday, October 6th, starting at 11:00. The route is approximately 1.5 km long and will be led by two local residents: landscape architect Thorbjörn Andersson and civil engineer Sören Johansson. The tour ends at Islandstorget Metro Station.
