Don't miss this green-classified cultural building, where the old fire station from 1940 has been transformed into an elementary school for over 1,000 students. The building gives a contemporary impression, with inspiration drawn from the fire station's original design. Tengbom's task was to bring together culturally significant buildings with a contemporary structure where aesthetics and functionality meet.
Midsommarkransen's new elementary school is well integrated next to the old fire station building. The building's interaction with the park contributes to both a schoolyard and an improved park, reinforcing the school as a central place in the district.
The new five-story school building is located behind the preserved fire station garage. The garage has been redesigned into a school cafeteria with preschool classrooms on the upper floor and has been connected to the new main building. In this way, the garage has been preserved with its period-typical facade as a backdrop at the Bäckvägen-Tellusborgsvägen intersection.
The new rectangular building concentrates the school's spaces into a compact area. This approach preserved the natural plot, where certain areas have been retained, including several large trees and an adjacent pine hill. The area behind the school building has been designed as a schoolyard and borders Enbacken's park with natural walking and cycling paths. The shared use between the schoolyard and the park enhances the area's appeal for the public as well.
The fire station's cultural buildings are green-classified, which required consultation with a building conservator. The preserved buildings have been carefully restored with original materials such as slate, brick, and wood. The new school building complements these with modern materials in a harmonious color palette.
The inspiration for the material choices and color tones of the new building was drawn from the original 1940s structure. We have chosen robust and durable materials such as concrete, aluminum, and wood. The school's function and the need for materials that can withstand wear and tear have also been a priority. In January 2023, the first lesson began.
Midsommarkransen's elementary school was nominated for Stockholm Building of the Year 2023. The tour will take place on Saturday, September 30, from 12:00 to 13:00
